Its been a while that i haven't updated the blog. The Majlis Ramah Mesra bersama rakyat for the Belait District was held on the 19 July 2008 at the Padang Bandaran Kuala Belait. About 2500 students participated this year field performance with the theme 'Sejambak Doa Memberiga Kasih". As a commitee for the HM's 62nd Birthday Celebration the for Belait District, i feel glad and bersyukur that everything went as planned on the actual day and special thanks to the 'urusetia' for their contribution and support for this year HM's 62nd Birthday Celebration For Belait District.

Some random pictures from my recent trip to the states. Didn't bring along my Digital SLR, back to the normal digital camera. The journey from Brunei took nearly 22hrs where from Kuala Lumpur to Stockholm (13 hrs) and Stockholm to Newark Liberty International Airport, New York ( 8 Hrs) and Newark Airport to Boston Logan International Airport just 45 mins. In term of sports, Boston are famous for its Boston Red Sox (BaseBall) and Boston Celtic (Basket Ball)

GAWAI CELEBRATION IN MUKIM SUKANG

Gawai Day, which falls on the 1st of June every year, is a day for all Ibans races in Brunei to celebrate the end of the harvest season. It is a tradition whereby Ibans will go back to their own village or “kampung” and celebrate Gawai Day together with their families.

The celebration starts on the evening of 31 May. In most Iban longhouses, it starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua (to cast away the spirit of greed), signifying the non-interference of the spirit of bad luck in the celebration. Two children or men each dragging a chapan (winnowing basket) will pass each family's room. Every family will throw some unwanted article into the basket. The unwanted articles will be tossed to the ground from the end of the longhouse for the spirit of bad luck.

Gawai Dayak celebration may last for several days. Visitors/Guests are most welcome to the homes of the Dayak during the festival.

Yesterday the residents of Rumah panjang Bang Taong celebrated their open house Gawai day. Guest of Honour for this event was Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdullah, Minister of Development.

Bang Taong Long House is situated in Mukim Sukang, Belait Dstrict and its about 1 hr 30 mins from Sg Liang. With a total of 21 Houses attached together this long House is also known as modern Long House where it is the only long house in Belait District probably in the whole Brunei which are built entirely out of concrete and you will be surprise the decoration of the interior of the Long House,

Most of the resident are Iban and are headed by Awg Jawa ak Gelayan, Bang Taong Chief Long House.

TIPS ON GETTING BETTER FUEL CONSUMPTION ON YOUR VEHICLES

First of all sorry for not updating the blog for such a long time (berhabuk hehe) been buzy with work especially for the preparation for the upcoming Sultan's 62nd Birthday celebration.

As a daily commuter from Bandar Seri Begawan to Kuala Belait, one thing that you need to think everyday is fuel consumption. As for myself using a 4x4 diesel commuting really save me on my petrol bills and what really open my eyes are the amount Brunei Government subsidize our petrol one of the highest subsidize in the world.

Take for instance from my calculation, to fill up my 4x4 diesel from empty to full without the subsidize of the government will cost me $52 where I’m paying only for $20. A tank full will last me atleast 3 days of commuting where an average per week I’m spending $40 on my petrol bills which works out $160 per month.

This means that the amount of petrol subsidize by the government for me alone will work up around $256 per month if not i’ll be paying $416 per month (karau eh).

So we have start to think and open our eyes on ways on saving on fuel consumption and think the amount of petrol subsidize by our government cost $202 million per year.

Here are some tips on getting better mileage on your vehicle:

1) Drive at a moderate speed. This is the biggest factor. You may have to be a little patient, but driving atleast 90 kmph instead of 110 kmph or 120kmph (average speed of road user from my observation) will save you money.

2) Drive smoothly. Avoid hard acceleration and braking whenever possible. Once up to speed on the highway, maintain a steady pace in top gear. Smooth acceleration, cornering, and braking also extend the life of the engine, transmission, brakes, and tyres.

3) Minimize driving with a cold engine. Engines run most efficiently when they're warm.Research shows that making multiple short trips and starting the engine from cold each time reduced fuel economy. Engines also produce more pollution and wear faster when they're cold. When possible, combine several short trips into one so that the engine stays warm.

4) Keep tyres properly inflated. More important, underinflated tires compromise handling and braking, and wear faster. And they run much hotter, which can lead to tyre failure.

5) Avoid idling for long periods. A smaller engine would probably burn less, but idling still adds up over time. As a rule, turn off your engine if you expect to sit for more than about 30 seconds. An engine warms up faster as it's driven anyway

The Belait District-level Executive Committee for His Majesty's 62nd Birthday Celebrations received contributions for the upcoming celebrations, which included $50,000 from Brunei Shell Petroleum, which was handed over by the Acting Director of BSP, Awg Hj Zainal Abidin bin Hj Mohd Ali and contribution of $20,000 from Brunei LNG was handed over by its Senior Plant Manager , Awg Hj Matsatejo bin Sokiaw.

Meeting between the Executive Committee and Chairperson of His Majesty's 62th birthday celebration in the Belait District were also held where the main agenda focused on the field performance as the climax of the `Majlis Ramah Mesra Bersama Rakyat' which will be held on the 19 July 2008 with the theme of the theme "Sejambak Doa Memberiga Kasih".

The event will be held at padang Bandaran Kuala Belait.

OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY IN LABI

The Oil well in Labi code name Belait-2 which was drilled in 1913

Oil Exploration in Brunei started in 1899 with the first recorded well drilled close to Brunei town, now known as Bandar Seri Begawan. Enthusiasm was high and six companies were involved in the oil search including Royal Dutch Shell, which started operations in 1913 after discovering the Miri field in Sarawak, Malaysia.

By 1918, all other companies had pulled out except Royal Dutch Shell, which continued to search and found some accumulation of oil and gas in Labi, Belait in 1924. A total 18 oil wells was explored during that time but the find was too small to be commercialised and it was abandoned by Royal Dutch Shell and moved to Seria where oil was discovered in 1929.

Now with modern advanced technology to explore oil such as 2D Seismic Reprocessing, aero-magnetic and gravitational works, 3D Seismic research. Chances of discovering oil at the area once abandoned by Royal Dutch Shell will bear

Petroluem Brunei has awarded TAP Energy (Borneo) an Australian based oil company to explore oil at Block M which covered an area of 3100 sq km which mainly at the remote area (Labi) in Belait District and southern part of Tutong district.

Yeterday a meeting with the Head of Wards (Penghulu Mukim), Head village and Head of long houses of the Belait District with personnel from Petroleum Brunei and TAP Energy was held at Dewan Qiyadah, Belait District Office. The aim of this meeting is to brief and get the opinions regards on the exploration of the Block M Area.

The exploration will begin in early june where aero-magnetic and gravitational works will be done and drilling insyallah will start in November this year.

The Baiduri Master came to an end today after a five-day tournament. Today its confirm that the winner of the Hole in One on Hole no 2 Awang Elyas Abdullah Yseu who made a historic hole-in-one at the charity golfing event bagged himself the BMW 730IL worth around BND 135,000 since no one got the hole-in-one on hole no 2 where prizes will be share if hole-in-one achieve on the same hole. It was the first hole-in-one in the 13-year history of the tournament. In the prize giving ceremony Awang Elyas donated BND 5000 for charity purpose.

I've played in a consistent game today eventho had to wake up early for the game. Didn't won any prizes today not even the lucky draw. I was eyeing on the grand lucky draw which is a 42 inchs LG LCD TV, better luck for next year. But the most important thing is i did enjoyed the game where this charity tournament is to raise funds for the Pusat Kaca , Smarter and Daycare centre of Ripas.

Jalan Menuju ke Mukim Labi

Rumah panjang Mendaram Besar terletak di Kawasan Kampung Labi 2, Mukim Labi, Daerah Belait. Rumah tersebut mempunyai 11 pintu yangmana ianya bermakna ianya seperti 11 buah rumah dalam sebuah rumah yang panjang. Ianya di ketuai oleh seorang Ketua Rumah Panjang, Awang Berandi Ak Jamau. Jumlah penghuni yang mendaftar mendiami rumah panjang tersebut seramai 187 orang. Penghuni yang berdaftar bermaksud mereka asalusul dari rumah panjang tersebut dan tinggal di kawasan bandar disebabkan kerja atau menuntut akan tetapi setiap minggu mereka akan pulang ke rumah panjang tersebut.

Rumah Panjang Mendaram Besar di Bina pada tahun 1970 yangmana ianya di bina oleh ayah kepada ketua rumah panjang sekarang iaitu Awg Jamau ak Kuning yangmana pada waktu beliau juga ketua rumah panjang Mendaram Besar.

Rumah Panjang Mendaram Besar selalu dikunjungi oleh pelancong-pelancong luar dan dalam negeri. Sebagai inisiatif kerajaan supaya ianya dijadikan tempat pelancongan , tandas awam dibina dan menaikan taraf jalan masuk ke rumah panjang.

Rumah PanjangMendaram besar telahpun menikmati bekalan eletrik dan juga penyambungan ayer bersih yangmana projek ini telahpun dilaksanakan pada awal tahun 90 an.

Pada kunjungan saya yang lepas ke Rumah Panjang Mendaram Besar dengan pegawai dari Jabatan Perdana Menteri kerana membawa sahabat lama kepada VVIP Negara Brunei Darussalam. Mereka amat kagum dengan budaya dan cara hidup masyarakat Iban dan berasa puas hati dengan kunjungan tersebut.

Dalam perjalanan pulang kami singgah ke Luagan Lalak yang terletak di kawasan Mukim Bukit Sawat.

When Antonio Pigafetta, who sailed with Magellan, visted Brunei Darussalam in 1521, he wrote,"When the tides rises the women go in boats through the city selling provision and necessities." (quote from a Primary 4 History text book).

As a request from a good friend of mine, he asked me to do an article on padian eventho in the Belait District i can't recall regards on the exsist of a padian, maybe in Kampong Sg Teraban, which i'm not sure of that.

Today only a handful of these women vendors or padian remain, all of them are elderly. These women who for long served the people of Kampung Ayer in Brunei Darussalam capital, Bandar Seri Begawan,paddling thier tiny boats around the houses to sell their goods.There are easily recognised by huge hats called seraung which protected them from the sun and the rain. Sources from my friend working in the Brunei Muara District Office, nowdays the padian abandoned paddling around the house of Kampung Ayer and now concentrate on selling to people who pass by the town waterfront near water taxis landing point each day.

Before they would paddle their boats everyway but now they don't dare to paddle out in the river now due to the fast and furious so called water taxis in the river.

Padian would usually sell fish, prawns, crabs,mussels, shellfish and vegetables and other daily needs.

Been buzy lately with work and couldn't update the blog, but i've got tons of information regards on Belait District and insyallah will try to update daily. I know its a bit late on posting this event poster, the first game will be play tommorrow morning 3 May 2008, but for all you golfers out there this year tournament will be organize in 2 weekends. Talk about the best charity tournament in Brunei so far. 5 luxury cars for the Hole in One Prizes and the lucky draws prizes i can say two thumbs up. Last year tournament i didn't won anything for the tournament prizes but i did won myself for the lucky draw which is a 4 in one canon printer.

Bukit Teraja is located about 87km from Kuala Belait town. It is one of the natural (Beauty) yet to be discover in Mukim Labi. You have to get to Rumah Panjang Teraja which is located at the far end of Mukim Labi. One of the natural beauty found in Bukit Teraja is the Waterfall and ‘Wasai’. It takes about 45 mins hiking from Rumah Panjang Teraja Mukim Labi and you have to be physically fit to reach the waterfall and ‘Wasai’.

A special budget was allocated to developed Bukit Teraja to transform it to a recreational centre similar to Wasai Wong Kadir which is now under the maintenance of Jabatan Alam Sekitar dan Taman Rekreasi (JASTRE).

Last Sunday personnels from the Belait District Office headed by Awang Haji Mohamad bin Haji Abd Rahman went to Bukit Teraja to have a closer look at the natural beauty of the area.

Reputed to be one of the highest hills in the Labi area, Bukit Teraja rewards the climbers with fine views over the Baram valley to the north and and Gunung Mulu.

A road safety roadshow with the theme of TELL A FRIEND was launched today in OGDC Seria by the YDM Pehin Datu Perkerma Setia Diraja Dato Seri Paduka Awang Zainuddin bin Jalani, Police commissioner Of Brunei Darussalam.

In his speech, the numbers of road traffic offenders has triple over the past few year where statistics shown that most accidents and fatalities in Brunei Darussalam are cause by speeding, not wearing seatbelts and helmets, usage of Mobile phone while driving.

The TELL A FRIEND theme is part of Brunei Shell Petroleum road safety Programe that urged road users to adhere with traffic rules as mention above and we/road user should cascade it to our families, friends about the dangers and consequences of violating the traffic regulations.

Therefore please buckle up the seatbelts (driver & Passenger), Do not use mobile phone while driving, adhere to the speed limits, be courtesy on the road and the most important thing is Doa for your safety,passengers and other road users.

The 2nd meeting for the prepration of His majesty Birthday Celebration in the Belait District was held today at Dewan Santap , Official resident of Belait District Officer was chaired by Haji Mohamad bin Haji Abd Rahman, Belait District Officer.

TRIP TO MUKIM MELILAS, BELAIT DISTRICT

The journey began with a signs of bad weather

Mukim Melilas is situated at the most remote part of Belait District and it covers an area or 603 Sq. KM. To reach Mukim Melilas you can either go by boat or 4 x 4 Vehicle (Since 2006). By boat you have to depart from Sg Mau Jeti (Mukim Bukit Sawat) and it will take about 2 hours and 30 mins depending on the water level.

The unpaved roads (13 Km) connecting Mukim Sukang and Mukim Melilas was completed in 2006 and residents or vistors who wish to go to Mukim Melilas are advised to use 4 x 4 vehicle.

Eventhough Mukim Melilas is located at the far end of the Belait District, the goverment has built a primary school, a clinic, a Balai Ibadat to cater the needs of the people of Mukim Melilas. With a population of 252 people and most of them are are Muslim Ibans who are headed by Yang DiMuliakan Pehin Datu Pekema Dewa Awang Haji Ali bin Abdullah@Itam, the acting Penghulu of Mukim Melilas.

Since Mukim Melilas is located near the border between Brunei and Sarawak, from time to time you can see Forest Rangers and the Royal Brunei Army guarding the forest area where the high quality famous Oud or 'Kayu Gaharu' are to be found in Mukim Melilas.

MINOR FIRE IN KG MUMONG ( DOUBLE STOREY HOUSE NEAR KOMPLEX SUKAN MUMONG)

A fire broke out in Kampung Mumong, Mukim Kuala Belait late this afternoon where a double storey house suffered a minor damage from the incident. The fire occurred around 4.30 pm and it was believed that the fire started from first floor of the house. The Fire and rescue department arrived just minutes after receiving the emergency call. It took just only 10 minutes to extinguish the fire. Alhamdulliah all the occupants are saved. The ground floor of the house only suffered water damaged. Sources said short circuit from the fuse box started the fire.

FATAL ACCIDENT IN SG LIANG

A man in his mid 40's was killed in a self accident at Km 34 Sungai Liang Belait at an early hour in Sunday. The victim was heading to Lumut from Bandar Seri Begawan when the accident happened at around 2.00 am were it was believe that his 4 x 4 vehicle lost control and crashed into the guard rail alongside of the road.

Road Users are advised to adhere with the speed regulation and take extra care when driving along the Sg Liang - Belait road where there are a lot of construction works taking place involving with heavy vehicle and especially during heavy downpour where land slide and floods will occur.

MAJLIS PENGUNDIAN KAMPONG PANDAN C, MUKIM BELAIT

Today's ceremony for the Pengundian of Ketua Kampong Pandan C ran smoothly but with a poor turnout of the eligble voters. There were 632 eligible voters which are registered with the secretariat of Mukim kampung, Belait District office and only 176 voted ie 27% of the total registered voters.

Haji Affandy bin Awang Damit got the majority votes of 110, meanwhile Haji Ismail bin Kassim got 66 votes. Today's results will be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further assesment then to His Masjesty Office for 'Titah Pekenan' from His Majesty The Sultan Of Brunei Darussalam for the election as a 'Ketua Kampong'.

OLD FOLKS HOME, SERIA.

Not many of us know that there’s an old folks centre here in the Belait District. Went there yesterday with one of the steering committee to have a closer look at the Old folks Home.
This centre is run by a non profitable organization and the capital to run this place and maintenance comes from donation from various private sectors and individuals.

As what was told by the centre usually the residents have no families and place to live in.
Every month doctors and nurses from government hospital will pay visits to check their condition and to supply their medication.

The building of this Old Folks home is used to be a government barracks back in the 1950’s. To my surprise this old folks home was officiated by the late Almarhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Saidul Khairulwaddin in 2nd March 1957 (the late father of our current Sultan HM Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizaddin Wadullah, Sultan dan yang di Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam).

On my way back to Tutong, an accident occur around 615 pm at KM 27 Sg Liang involving three cars, A BMW , Honda Jazz and Toyota Corona. No one was hurt and the cause of this accident could be an abrupt braking by the Toyota Corona which led into this chain of accidents.

Road users are advised to drive carefully at this area and adhere to the speed limit and the most important and what you should always remember is 'WEAR SEATBELT' even tho taking a short trip.

In this gotong royong activity, more than 150 participants join to take part in this event, comprise of Officers and departments from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Head of Departments in the Belait District, students from the Nursing College BSB, Majlis Perundingan Mukim /Kampong of Labi consultative and residents of Mukim Belait.

Padi harvesting in a traditional concept of voluntarily working together in groups, gotong royong or "memucang -mucang" will be held this Sunday in Mukim Labi, Belait District.

Guest of honors for this event will be the Minister of Home Affairs, an area of 5 ‘ekar’ will be harvest in gotong royong by the guest of honor, various government agencies, Mukim/Kampung Consultative Council, residents of Mukim Labi and invited guest.

All are welcomed to this event and for those who are eager to join, please wear suitable attire eg Long Sleeves shirts, Fishing hat or caps, boots and please bring along a pocket knife (Not kitchen knife) and gloves. ( Attire can be view at my recent post on padi harvesting)

Been buzy lately with work and i supposed to post up the ' Hari Pelanggan' of Ministry of Home Affairs which was held on the 27 feb 2008 at Dewan Muhibbah, Brunei Muara District Office.

' Hari pelanggan' for Belait District Office and departments of Ministry of Home Affairs in Belait will be on the 3 and 4 of march at kompleks 3S in seria (Gerai Makan).

I'll be away for 2 weeks hope i can update the blog frequently.

As mention at my earlier post the traditional concept of voluntarily working together in groups, gotong royong or "memucang -mucang" is still being practised in Brunei Darussalam.

This morning gotong royong was held at Kampung Pandan B, Kuala Belait. Various goverment department, Majlis Perundingan Kampong Pandan B and residents of Kampong Pandan B involved in the cleaning campaign. The campaign was headed by Awg Haji Mohamad bin Haji Abd Rahman , Belait District Officer.

Youths were also involved in the campaign

This cute little guy is the most proactive among the youths and told me that he will play football at kompleks sukan Mumong with his team later this afternoon.

Look what they caught while cleaning the drain outlet, live eels and they believe its good for 'Tenaga Batin' hehe

Traffic was horrendous at 7.00 am in the capital town. Saw many jaywalkers passing the roads on their destination to the SOAS padang. Good thing our team's focal point is near Citibank. Didn't bring along my camera as I was involved in the department representative for the national day marching. Met a few shutterbugs such as gferro, Ichinose and Butakaler and I insisted them to take pictures of our group. Hey guys, don't forget to email me or post up the pictures.

Every year we celebrate our national day on the 23rd of Feb despite gaining our independence on the 1 January 1984. So why don't we celebrate our national day on the 1st January every year? I was informed the reason sometime ago but it somehow has slipped my mind. I will try to find out again but should any of you know why, do let us know......

I'm sure most of you had the experience of filling up the fuel at the filling station and i'm pretty sure some of you sometime forgot which side is the fuel cap of the car is, and this will lead to sticking your head out of the door to check whether the fuel door cap is on the right or left.

Well people, I'm going to share with you a little secret so you will no longer look like a giraffe on your way to the filling station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury.

On the dashboard, If you look at your fuel gauge, you will see a small icon of a fuel pump.

If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left (Fig 1.1) or handle will be on the right with an arrow pointing to the left side. (Fig 1.2)

PADI HARVESTING IN MUKIM LABI

Labi is located about 68 km from the Belait Town, It cover an area of 361 sq km with a population of 2300 people .

The mukim was divided into two zones which are known as Labi Satu (one) and Labi Dua (two). Both zones have their own ketua kampong. There are four longhouses in the vicinity with its own respective chief.

Mukim Labi is well known locally for its agricultural products especially the limau labi which has become a trademark of local orange and Padi.

The traditional concept of voluntarily working together in groups, gotong royong or "memucang -mucang", is still being practised in Brunei Darussalam.

The Minister of Health, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi as well as the Belait District Officer, Haji Mohamad bin Haji Abd Rahman, last year took part in a padi harvesting activity at the Gatas area in Mukim Labi in the Belait District. Officers and staff of Belait District Office and Ministry of Health also took part. A group of volunteers also joined and members of the Mukim Consultative Council and the residents in the harvesting of padi at the Paya Gatas padi field in Labi.

Last year, the harvesting campaign was at Dayang Hapsah binti Abu Bakar’s padi farm, an area of 2 acres. Dayang Hapsah, a 67 year old single mother, has been planting paddy since the year 2000. The Gatas area is one of the country’s main locations for paddy farming with an area of thirty hectares.

Today the flag hoisting ceremony will be carried out in all four districts in the country for the 24th National day of Brunei. Couldn't attend the function in Kuala Belait today due to my flight time in the morning. To all viewers please flag up the Brunei National Flag starting today till the 29 Feb and show your support and patriotism.

I'm Pretty sure that some of you never been to Sukang. Here's some information about Mukim Sukang.

It is situated in the rural part of Belait District and it takes
about 2 hrs by Boat from Sungai Mau Jeti in Mukim Bukit Sawat , Kuala Belait or you can drive to Sukang using 4x4 vehicle (Compulsory) and it takes nearly
2-3 hours depending on the condition of the roads

It cover an area of 812 sq Km.

There are several kampongs in Mukim Sukang, KAMPUNG DUNGUN,

Population of 615, has 15 government buildings, 31 private houses and five Longhouses.

Public facilities in Mukim Sukang include unpaved roads, solar telephone communication, surau , primary school, police pos, health clinic, multi-purpose hall and a government resthouse.

Went to Sukang few months ago and this is my 1oth time going to Sukang.

Kompleks Pasarneka dan Tamu Tutong

Went to Kompleks Pasarneka dan Tamu Tutong in Serambangun this morning with my wife to have a closer look of the Thursday Market.

This Complex is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs strategic objective for the year 2005 to 2025 where to provide infrastructure and public facilities to boost up the country's economic development.

It costs about 9 million dollars where construction began in 2005 and completed in March 2007 and has 200 weekend stalls, 16 fish stalls, 16 vegetable stalls, 4 mini supermarkets, 6 food stalls, office space and surau (which is compulsory for every new government building)

The Brunei National flag hoisting ceremony for this year 24th National Day for Tutong Distict will be held here on Sunday 10 Feb 2008 around 10.00 am, so make sure to flag up the national flag starting this sunday till the 29 Feb 2008.

Before heading back home, we had our brunch at the legendary Soto dish known as Soto Haji Tuah situated at the complex Food Stall.

Had to settle down with soto biasa, soto Special sold out.

For those who celebrate Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai and Welcome to the year of the rats.

DangerMouse, for those of you who DON'T know, is a cartoon superhero which first aired in 1981 and he is a wacky and hilarious adventure featuring a white secret agent mouse and his trusty bumbling sidekick hampster assistant- Penfold

I use to watch this cartoon in the mid 80's and usually with my lunch or dinner and his favorite phrase are "Penfolddddd Shush!" and 'Good Grief'
